Roy Walter Wyant was born November 18, 1932, in Leechburg, PA to Nelson E. and Pearl G. Wyant. The family lived in Ohio and New York before moving to Wapato, WA in 1947 when Roy was 15. In 1950, the Wyant's moved to Prineville, OR where he and his dad built churches for the Church of God of Prophecy, building several throughout Eastern Oregon. They also built many homes in Prineville where he met the love of his life, Velma Lucille Meritt (Lucy) in 1951. Roy and Lucy eloped to Augusta, AR in October, 1952 and settled back in Prineville, welcoming their first child, Sandra, in October, 1953. Their first son, Donnie, was born in 1955. The young family moved to Crescent City, CA where their son Rick was born in 1956. Daughter Beverly arrived next in 1957 in San Jose, CA where Roy worked on the construction crew building the new hospital. Daughter Carolyn was born in 1959 in Livermore, CA where Roy worked on the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. In early 1960 Roy moved his growing family to Atascadero, CA to build homes with his father Nelson, forming Wyant & Wyant Construction. Roy and Lucy welcomed their youngest children; JoAnn in 1962 and John in 1963, both born in Paso Robles, CA. As a General Contractor, Roy usually had three generations of his family on the job site, and occasionally, his two brothers David and Gary worked along side he and his dad. Through 2000, when he retired, he had built or remodeled 185 plus homes in Atascadero and throughout SLO County. He built many custom homes, as well as spec houses, which his family often moved into, only to then pack up and move again when he sold the newest house to someone desiring a sought after "Wyant Constructed Home." Roy designed most of his own building plans as the architect and held Master level building licenses in electrical and plumbing, in addition to his General Contractor's License. In addition to maintaining the bookkeeping duties for the construction business and picking up building materials to deliver to the job sites, Lucy maintained an impeccably managed household while raising their six children. The Wyant family vacationed in Oregon every summer while the kids were young; camping and attending family reunions in Cascadia State Park and later with their own families at Roy and Lucy's Ranch near Lebanon, OR. Roy and Lucy continued to spend the latter years between their home in Atascadero and the ranch in Lebanon, as well as visiting with sons John and his family in Lebanon, Rick and his family in LaPine, OR; and daughter JoAnn and her family in Coalinga, CA . Roy spent many hours tinkering in his shop, gardening and searching for rare treasures at local garage sales. He enjoyed having his family, friends and anyone who would happen to stop by the house for holidays and any other occasion that called for a gathering. Roy and Lucy's door is always open to visitors, old and new. They were blessed to have never met a stranger and "inducted" many a friend into the family as full fledged "Wyants." Many a gathering included four and five generations of the large family until his parent's passing in 1999 and 2005. Roy passed away peacefully on Monday, April 23, 2012, of complications due to congestive heart failure while riding in his truck with Lucy, son Rick and daughter-in-law Barb between Atascadero and Templeton. Roy and Lucy would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 27, 2012. In addition to his loving wife Lucy, Roy is survived by his children: Sandra Champion of Hope AR; daughter-in-law Linda Wyant of Atascadero; Rick and Barb Wyant of LaPine, OR; Carolyn and Robert McBurney of Orcutt, CA; JoAnn and Brian Forzetting of Coalinga, CA; and John and Laurie Wyant of Lebanon, OR. In addition, Roy is survived by his siblings: Ginger Weisel of Clovis, CA; David Wyant of Clovis, CA; Naomi and John Ferrell of Grants Pass, OR; Jan and Carl Brown of Hesperia, CA; and Gary and Debbie Wyant of Madera, CA. Also surviving Roy is his Uncle Bob and Aunt Anna Rearick of Carson, CA; Cousin Leonard Riggle and wife Gloria of Chico, CA; and Sister-in-Law Marilyn Middleton and her husband Jackie of Madras, OR. Roy and Lucy are blessed with 19 grandkids, 20 great grandkids, four honorary children (Kevin and Peggy Hasch of Atascadero and Dale and Kathryn Simmons of Eufalla, OK); four honorary grandkids; five honorary great grandkids and numerous nieces, nephews, and greats. Roy enjoyed morning coffee with neighbor and friend of 52 years, Len Gibaut and lunches with Dave and Janet Grummitt. Roy was preceded in death and reunited in Heaven by family members: daughter Beverly (1959), sister Hazel Ann (1967), grandson Casey (1995), father Nelson (1999), brother-in-law Ed Currier, Sr., (2002), mother Pearl (2005); and son Donnie (2008). Services are to be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 Chapel of the Roses, Atascadero: Viewing 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.; Memorial 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow at Colony Hall, Best Western Colony Inn, Atascadero.
